Hot tub pad and base options: what actually holds the weight
The short version
A hot tub pad has one job: spread the weight of a filled tub, roughly 1,800 to 7,400 lb across the models on this site, without shifting, tilting, or washing out. A level 4 inch reinforced concrete slab, pavers over compacted gravel, or a prefab spa pad on a gravel bed all do it. Bare lawn, loose fill, and an unrated deck do not.
Shell warranties commonly require a flat, level, structurally sound base, and the failure mode is slow: a base that settles unevenly twists the cabinet, stresses the plumbing, and turns into a drained-tub, crane-back repair. The load numbers below tell you why grass and good intentions are not a base.
Prepping the spot
- Pick for service, not just looks. Leave access to the equipment panel side, keep the tub within reach of the electrical disconnect rules, and think about the walk from the door in winter.
- Strip and dig. Remove sod and topsoil down to firm ground; organic soil compresses and is where the tilt comes from.
- Build up in compacted lifts. Gravel added a few inches at a time and compacted each lift is what keeps the base from settling later.
- Check level both ways before the tub arrives, because you will not be re-leveling with 3,000 lb of water on top. Delivery day is also the day to plan the route to the pad.

Filled weight = dry shell + water + occupants at 185 lb each, the same model the calculator uses. Spread over a typical footprint that works out to a sustained load in the range of a parked car sitting in one spot forever, which is what the base has to be built for.
What a hot tub base has to do
- Stay level. Shells are supported across the whole cabinet floor. A base out of level concentrates the load on part of the shell and makes doors, covers, and lifts sit wrong.
- Not settle differentially. Uniform settling is survivable; one corner sinking is what cracks shells. This is why compaction under pavers and gravel matters more than the surface material.
- Drain. Water pooling under the cabinet rots wood bases, rusts frames, and freezes into heave in winter. Gravel beds drain natively; slabs should shed water away from the tub.
- Outlast the tub. The tub sits there for a decade. Temporary surfaces, and that includes decorative pavers laid on sand with no compacted base, migrate under vibration and load cycles.

Common questions
Can a hot tub sit directly on grass or dirt?
No. Lawn and topsoil compress unevenly under a multi-ton sustained load, and the tub tilts within a season. The minimum working base is excavated, compacted gravel with edging; grass also traps moisture under the cabinet, which rots wood frames.
How thick should a concrete pad be for a hot tub?
The commonly quoted spec is a 4 inch reinforced slab on a compacted sub-base for a full size tub, and thicker where soil is soft or a swim spa is going on it. Your dealer's site prep sheet and local frost rules govern; many manufacturers publish a required pad spec that the warranty leans on.
Can my deck hold a hot tub?
Only a structural review can answer that. A filled 6-person tub runs about 3,000 to 6,600 lb concentrated on a few dozen square feet, which is far beyond typical residential deck live-load design. Decks can absolutely be built or reinforced for it; the order is engineer first, tub second.
Are prefab plastic spa pads any good?
On a properly leveled and compacted gravel bed, yes: they spread load well, drain, and go down in an afternoon. On unprepared ground they simply follow the soil as it settles. The panels are the finish surface; the compaction under them is the actual base.
