Hot tub calcium hardness
Calcium hardness is the one balance number you cannot dose in both directions. Raising it is a simple addition; lowering it means swapping out water, so it pays to get your fill right from the start.
The target range
Most spa guidance puts calcium hardness in the 150 to 250 ppm band (some tubs with certain surfaces sit a little higher; check your manual). Too soft and the water turns aggressive, foaming easily and pulling minerals out of metal parts. Too hard and it clouds and lays down scale on the heater and jets. The numbers first
Aim for calcium hardness around 150 to 250 ppm. If it is low, the water foams and can corrode heaters and seals, so raise it with a calcium hardness increaser (calcium chloride). If it is high, the water clouds and scales, and the only real fix is to dilute it with a partial or full water change using softer water. There is no cheap chemical that lowers hardness.
How to raise low calcium
- Test first with a strip or kit that reads calcium hardness.
- Add a calcium hardness increaser (calcium chloride) sized by the amount on its label for your gallons, in small steps with the pump running. Doses vary by brand, so follow the label rather than a generic figure.
- Circulate and retest before adding more. Calcium chloride dissolves with a little heat, so give it time.
- Recheck pH afterward, since raising hardness can nudge it. Low calcium is a common hidden cause of stubborn foam.
Dose a little at a time with the pump on, then wait and retest before adding more. Never combine chemicals with each other, and your product label overrides anything here.
How to lower high calcium
You cannot easily remove calcium with a chemical, so lowering it means diluting: drain part of the water and top up with softer water, or do a full drain and refill. If your tap water itself is very hard, fill through a hose pre-filter to cut the hardness going in, which keeps the next fill in range longer. A stain and scale control product (a sequestrant) can hold dissolved calcium in solution so it does not lay down scale while you plan a change, but it does not lower the hardness number.
