Hot tub jets not working

Quick answer

Weak or dead jets are usually not a broken pump. The common causes, in order, are an air lock after a refill, a low water level, a closed air or diverter valve, and a clogged filter. Work down those four and the jets almost always come back.

A tub that just got refilled and now has dead jets is the classic case, and it is almost always an air lock, not a failure. Here is what to check before you call anyone.

Check these in order

  1. Water level. If the water is below the skimmer or the highest jets, the pump pulls in air instead of water and the jets go weak or stop. Top up to the line first; it is the easiest fix and a common one.
  2. Air controls and diverters. The knobs on the rim open and close air to the jets and divert flow between seats. A closed air control or a diverter turned away from your seat makes jets feel dead. Open the air valves and turn the diverter toward the jets you are using.
  3. Clear an air lock. After a drain and refill, air gets trapped in the pump and lines. Try turning the jets on and off a few times, or open the air controls fully with the pump running. If that fails, with the power off, slightly loosen the union fitting on the pump until water weeps out and air escapes, then snug it back and restart. That burps the lock and primes the pump.
  4. Clean the filter. A clogged cartridge starves the pump of flow, which reads as weak jets. Rinse it, or soak it, or swap a spare. See cleaning the filter.

If the jets are still weak

Common questions

Why are my hot tub jets weak after refilling?

Almost always an air lock. Refilling traps air in the pump and plumbing, so the pump cannot prime. Cycle the jets on and off, open the air controls fully, or briefly loosen the pump union to let the air escape. The jets return once the air is out.

Why did only some jets stop?

That is usually a diverter valve, which routes flow between groups of jets or seats, or closed air controls on those jets. Turn the diverter toward the dead jets and open their air valves. If only one nozzle is out, it may be scaled and need a soak.

When is it actually the pump?

When a pump is silent and warm to the touch, hums without moving water, or the breaker trips when the jets call for high speed. Check water level, air controls, an air lock, and the filter first, because those fix most cases. If all four are good and a pump is dead, call a technician.
